Foteviken Viking Reserve

After spending a lovely morning strolling through Hjärup and Lund, Oliver and I decided to take a trip to the famous Foteviken Viking Reserve.

Unfortunately we had arrived a bit late in the day so we only had just over an hour to check out the cool exhibitions and chat with a real live viking ;)

The inside museum is filled with information which makes you stand their going ooooh and aaah. Like the fact that the Vikings never wore horns on their helmets but that this was the product of an opera trying to make the play more dramatic. Or the fact that Thursday is actually Thor's Day (The day of the God of Thunder). There was a lot more including some great maps which detailed how the Vikings expanded their power.

However, as you step outside you get a greater glimpse of the everyday life of the Vikings - beyond the conquests. The village is kitted out with a watch tower, kiln, kitchen, woodwork, and the list goes on - there are 22 structures in total. It was great just walking through the village even though it lacked readily accessible information on how the buildings were used.

One of the best parts was when we got to speak to a modern day viking - more like a man who looks a lot like you would imagine a viking to look but who is a wealth of knowledge. He sat explaining the links between the en d of the Viking era and Christianity and how most Vikings were farmers and not pillagers and rapists but that this was a common discourse used by Christians.

No, this isn't the Viking local I was telling you about.
This is my overly-hairy boyfriend, Oliver :)

It would be a better idea to go early on in the day where you can grab one of the guided tours at 11am, 1pm, and 2:30pm but if not just do like we did and chat to one of the locals!
