OK, a little bit about me...Well I am a 25 year old South African and I am trying to get an Masters at Lund University in Gender Studies. Gender Studies? The response I get when I tell people that is "Interesting, that's very interesting". I often get the feeling that people feel slightly intimidated or awkward by it because they are all wondering if I am some raging feminist that hates men....Well, no! That's not quite what gender studies is about...
So, how did I get here? I did my undergraduate degree in Journalism with dreams of becoming a radio presenter (which I did on campus for a while) but my minor Political Science was calling more to me and I decided to do my BA Hons in Political Science (as well as Journalism). During my honours year I was also awarded an internship at Consultancy Africa Intelligence in the Gender Unit and I really took a shinning to it! I found that the material really intrigued me and thought that I should direct my research paper toward something that interested me...So I explored the possibility of Sexual/Gender Terrorism during times of war. Ha, and lucky me, it was published. So I figured that this is probably something I should explore more but not right away! After four years of studying and working I needed a break!
So I opted for a year of teaching in South Korea which was honestly one of the best experiences of my life!!! Oliver (my wonderful boyfriend of seven years) and I lived in a small city in South Korea and fell in love with the small country while we learnt more about a culture that was very foreign to us.
Then shortly after my contract had ended in Korea I was notified that I was an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship recipient and that I would be leaving for Sweden! Eeeeek!
The only downside of this amazing opportunity is that I would be away from friends and family for another two years and this time I would be going without Oliver (we are doing long distance now). But recognising that this was a once in a life time opportunity I packed my bags and headed to Scandinavia to get my Masters at one of the world's leading universities!
Other than that..I am an ordinary South African. I love braais, sunsets, good wine, and food of any variety! I come from a country that is diverse but it an integral part of me and how I understand the world!
And I guess...in a nutshell, that is me!
